Speech and language therapy addresses deficits in articulation and phonology (the sounds you make and how you make them), expressive and receptive language (the words and sentences you use and what you understand), and pragmatics (how we use verbal and nonverbal communication to interact with others). Therapy is tailored to a child’s needs and is addressed in a play-based format.

Much like the medical field, the clinical field of speech and language pathology is vast. SLPs are certified to work with clients throughout the lifespan with numerous conditions. Through my practice, I have completed extensive continuing education on speech sound disorders and consider this to be my specialty. Just like you would not see a cardiologist for a gi issue (even though both doctors went to medical school), I believe that the field of speech and language pathology should be more specialized in order for clinicians to acquire appropriate training and for clients to receive the best possible therapy.
If your child presents with a disorder and/or condition for which I do not feel I am the best provider, I will refer you to a SLP that is more specialized in the documented area of need.
